God and Armies

One of the most prominent names and descriptions of God is (Adonai Tseva'ot), "YHVH of armies" (Isaiah 6:3). It is difficult in this modern world to understand God in some kind of military role. Here are some biblical perspectives:

1. God is sovereign over the armies of heaven and earth, and is an expert at the strategies of warfare - Exodus 15:3, Psalm 24:8.

2. There are armies of angels that are occasionally seen by human beings - II Kings 6:17.

3. The chief commander of the angelic armies is Yeshua (Jesus) Himself - Joshua 5:13-15.

4. As commander, Yeshua (or one of the top angel generals) has the power to destroy an entire human army single-handedly - Isaiah 37:36.

5. The angelic armies may accompany a human army if that army has righteous leadership and is fighting for a righteous cause - II Samuel 5:24.

6. There is warfare in the spiritual realm between good angels loyal to God and bad angels in satanic rebellion - Revelation 12:7.

7. Both good and bad angels are ordered in a hierarchy with military-type ranks - Ephesians 6:12.

8. One important strategy is to pray for the forces of demonic angels to be divided and fight among themselves - Luke 11:17.

9. Ultimately that spiritual warfare will culminate in a great end times' battle in which Yeshua will descend from heaven leading the angelic armies - Revelation 19:11.

10. When Yeshua and and His angels descend, they will fight against the armies of an evil world empire on this earth - Revelation 16:14, 16; 19:19.

11. Yeshua will fight against and destroy those armies that have united together to attack Israel - Zechariah 12:3, 9; 14:2-4, 12.

12. Sometimes extended prayer and fasting is needed to understand these spiritual battles concerning Israel and the end times - Daniel 9:1, 20-22; 10:2, 12-14, 20-21.

13. However, the angelic armies will start to respond from the very first moment we begin to pray (if we pray according to God's will) - Daniel 9:23; 10:12.

14. There is three-way coordination between the praise of the saints, the spiritual warfare in heaven and the military battles on earth - Isaiah 30:32.

Spiritual and earthly warfare is likely to become increasingly intense as we progress into the end times. May God grant us wisdom for prayer strategies that match His strategies!

During the height of the bombings (during the recent military operation in Gaza, "Pillar of Cloud"), I needed to go to Tel Aviv and I invited my niece from Rishon Lezion to come with me. On the way, I shared the Gospel with her. Then we sat by the sea and talked for a long time. She wept and asked Yeshua into her heart. Little did we know, but precisely at that moment a rocket fell in Rishon Lezion destroying the building facing the shop where she normally would have been working. She has not ceased to praise the Lord since then for His goodness to her.

Some interesting statistics from operation "Piller of Cloud"

Israeli Strikes in Gaza

  • 1,600 sites in Gaza attacked by Israeli air forces
  • 980 of those sites were rocket launchers
  • 206 weapons smuggling tunnels
  • 30 terrorist leaders killed in pinpointed attacks
  • 19 Hamas command centers

Gazan Rockets toward Israel

  • 1,506 rockets fired from Gaza toward Israel
  • 152 of those were misaimed and fell within Gaza (!?)
  • 875 landed in unpopulated areas in Israel
  • 421 were intercepted in the air by the Iron Dome defense
  • 84% - amazing success rate of Iron Dome
  • 50,000 dollars - cost for each Iron Dome missile
  • 58 Gazan rockets landed in Israeli populated areas

Putting it in Perspective

  • 6 Israelis killed by Gazan rockets
  • 156 Gazans killed by Israel in "Pillar of Cloud" operation.
  • 850 Syrians killed by Syrians during the same 7 days.

This year at Ahavat Yeshua Congregation has been especially active with multiple weddings, bar mitzvahs and births. Amazingly, in the month of October five women gave birth!

The first baby, Eliyav, was born to Ariel, a sabra, and Sharona, who made aliya from North America. They have been married two years and he is their first child. The next two births were on the same day one week later! Ron was born to Hezi and Odelia (Asher and Betty's oldest son and daughter-in-law). Benyamin was born to Ariel, pastoral assistant, and Vered, his sabra wife. The only girl in the bunch, Liana, was born to Yonaton and Simcha (Dan Juster's son-in-law and daughter). The fifth baby, Uziel, was born to Reuven and Natalya, immigrants from North and South America. They have been married only one year and Uziel is their first child.

Since four of the babies were boys, this produced another set of events - four "brits" (circumcision ceremony or literally "covenant"). Two brit ceremonies were performed the same weekend and one was celebrated as part of our congregational worship service.

We are so proud of these young couples who have chosen to take on the mantle of parenthood in the face of such opposition in the world today.

Does anyone want to have friends and be a friend? Does anyone want to be a friend to Yeshua? Is being a friend important?

Yeshua said that the end purpose of discipleship is to be His friends: "No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends" (John 15:15). We were created to be friends with God and friends with one another. We raised our children with the hope of their eventually becoming our best friends.

But being a friend is not so easy: "Many a man will declare his own goodness, but a faithful man, who can find?" (Proverbs 20:6). It takes faithfulness to be a good friend. Many of us are too caught up in work and ministry to be able to take time for relationship building.

In the story of the Good Samaritan, Yeshua emphasized that the issue is not who our neighbor is but whether we ourselves are acting as a good neighbor (Luke 10:36). [My mother-in-law used to tell her daughters, "Don't look for the right man; be the right woman."]

The test of a real friend is whether he will stay with you in difficult times. There is a price to pay in order to forge friendships that will last: "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity" (Proverbs 17:17). Yeshua paid the ultimate price to be friends with us.

God gives us time, resources and opportunities in this lifetime. One of the goals of this life is to build friendships that will last forever: "Make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when it fails, they may receive you into an everlasting home" (Luke 16:9). Yeshua was not speaking of using money manipulatively in order to "buy" people's loyalty. He was emphasizing the priority of making "forever-type" friends, and using all the means at our disposal to do so.

Everything in this life will pass away. Only true loving relationships will last forever.
